Pierpaolo Leo (or Pleo) is an electronic music experimenter. He started with the avantgarde-rock band "Les Enfantes Rouges", playing concrete music during their live-performances. In 2001 he released the album "Before Breakin'" for the Italian label Audioglobe. In 2005 was released "Unclocked", a work informed by an interest in unstable systems, particularly concerning rhythm obtained by the use of parallel meters technique. "Between Two Points is a beautiful demonstration of his techniques in action, sounding like pendulums slowly coming to rest over glowing embers.” (The Wire - april 2006).
He participated in many important Italian electronic festivals like: Enzimi/Italian Live Media in Rome 2004, Netmage Festival (2004/2005/2006 - Bologna), TDK Dance Marathon in Milan (2005), Videotronica 2006 at Pordenone, Zo Culture (2007, Catania, Sicily) and many more.
Pierpaolo Leo worked for few years with the Italian director/video designer Claudio Sinatti, (he collaborated with Christian Fennesz, Ulrich Troyer, Scanner, Pirandèlo etc. and is the author of many pop video clips). In 2006 they presented a project based on the audio-visual improvisation called "Dandelion Key" performed for the first time at the Italian festival Netmage (Bo, Italy) .
Recently Pierpaolo Leo and Populous (Morr Music) worked to a duo-project called "Echoes of the Whales". The album with the same title was issued by Disasters by Choice Records."...love and beauty are not only picture-postcard smiles, but true words, where ambient and vintage electronics are not only studio games but sediments of a rich and great experience" (Blow Up - June 2007). Pierpaolo Leo works also with software that generates automatic electronic compositions, and many of them are employed in his sound installations. “Variations II” is the personal interpretation of the homonymous work by John Cage (1961).
It is a musical composition without a fixed musical score and it is given by the objects and the indispensable instructions to release it. Pierpaolo Leo created a software that calculates in real time all the necessary parameters for the creation of the score and the sounds receiving its main input by the important interaction of the sound installation visitors.
Another important installation was "Finisterrae's Cronotopo" by Pierpaolo Leo and Urkuma: a time-space sound trip obtained by the recording of 190 kilometers on the Salento Italian coast, inspired by Murray Schaffer, the author of Canadian soundscape.

Pierpaolo Leo (o Pleo), inizia la sua attività di musicista elettronico nel '97 con il gruppo di rock-avanguardia Les Enfantes Rouges attraverso interventi elettroacustici durante i loro concerti. Dopo una serie fitta di collaborazioni realizza nel 2001 l'album di musica concreta Before Breakin' pubblicato dalla fiorentina Audioglobe.
Nel 2005 realizza l'album "Unclocked", un lavoro che dimostra l'interesse verso sistemi instabili soprattutto nei riguardi del ritmo, concepito attraverso l'uso di metri paralleli. Ha partecipato a numerosi festival di musica elettronica tra i quali : "Tre giornate di musica elettronica" al Conservatorio V. Bellini di Palermo, Enzimi/Italian Live Media 2004 a Roma, TDK dance marathon 2005 a Milano, Netmage 2004/2005/2006 a Bologna, Videotronica 2006 a Pordenone, presso il centro Zo Culture di Catania nel 2007 e tantissimi altri.
Collabora da alcuni anni con il regista/video designer italiano Claudio Sinatti, (autore di video clips per artisti pop e con all’attivo collaborazioni con Christian Fennesz, Ulrich Troyer, Scanner, Pirandèlo ecc.) dando vita al progetto di improvvisazione audio visuale Dandelion Key proposto la prima volta all’interno del festival di arti visive e sonore Netmage 2006 a Bologna.
Recentemente Pierpaolo Leo e Populous (Morr Music) hanno dato vita al duo "Echoes of the Whales", con un album pubblicato con l'omonimo titolo da Disasters by Choice Records nel 2007. "...amore e bellezza non sono solo sorrisi da cartolina ma parole vere, dove ambient ed elettronica vintage non sono solo giochi di studio ma sedimenti di un percorso già ricco e maturo" (Blow Up - giugno 2007). Pierpaolo Leo realizza softwares che auto generano composizioni elettroniche, molti dei quali sono destinati alle installazioni sonore.
Variations II è la personale interpretazione dell'omonima opera di John Cage (1961): un'opera senza una partitura musicale stabilita e data dal materiale e le istruzioni necessarie per realizzarla. Pierpaolo Leo ne ha dato una personale interpretazione attraverso la creazione di un apposito software che ne consente la realizzazione in tempo reale attraverso l'apporto indispensabile dei visitatori dell' omonima installazione.
Tra le installazioni sonore va menzionato il progetto realizzato in collaborazione con Urkuma dal titolo FINISTERRAE'S CRONOTOPO: un viaggio spazio-temporale interattivo, realizzato attraverso la registrazione sonora di circa 190 chilometri di costa salentina ed ispirato ai "soundscapes" di Murray Schaffer.
